How to play Grit & Grain
Look at both samples: they are the same material, and one of them has a single flaw.
Read the label above the cards: it names the material and the kind of flaw to look for.
Tap or click the flawed sample, or press ← or ↑ for the first and → or ↓ for the second, before the fuse burns down.
Keep picking right to grow your streak multiplier up to ×4; a wrong pick or a burnt-out fuse is a strike.
Last the 90-second clock without three strikes for the best score.

Tips
Do not comb both cards inch by inch. Rest your eyes on the middle of one card and let whatever breaks the pattern jump out; if nothing does after a moment, it is probably the other card.
Learn each material's flaw: a long bar in the weave, a gap in a tree ring, a wedge of grout around a tile, a lump in the sandpaper, a fat dot in the halftone. The label above the cards tells you which one is coming.
Speed is worth up to double points, but a strike costs your whole streak multiplier. On the subtle later rounds an extra half second is cheaper than a wrong guess.
Flaws never sit right at the edge of a card, so look at the middle two thirds first.
When you miss, study the loupe: it shows the flaw magnified, and the same kind of flaw comes back once in every eight rounds.
About Grit & Grain
Grit & Grain is a free online spot the odd one out game and a quick visual perception test. Two samples of the same material lie on a cutting mat: sandpaper, woven fabric, tree rings, brick, glazed tiles, knitting, a halftone print or honeycomb. They match down to the last grain, except for one tiny flaw on one of them: a rogue grain, a thread woven the wrong way, a broken ring, a brick out of line. Tap the flawed sample before its fuse burns down, then do it again, faster, for 90 seconds. It plays in your browser with no download and no sign-up, on mobile and PC.
Where a classic spot the difference game such as Double Take asks you to hunt slowly for five changes in a busy scene, Grit & Grain is a two-choice reaction test: one flaw, two cards, a couple of seconds. Every material has its own kind of flaw, and the label above the cards says what to look for: one dot the wrong size in the halftone, one brick lifted or sunk out of its course, one thread floating over three crossings, one tree ring broken, one tile set askew, one oversized grain in the sandpaper, one stitch turned in the knitting and one cell shrunk in the honeycomb. Pick the clean card, or let the fuse burn out, and the flaw is ringed in red pencil and shown under a loupe, so you learn exactly what to look for next time.
The run starts gently: the first flaws are obvious and the fuse burns for three seconds. Every three rounds they get subtler, the dot only a little larger, the brick only a few millimetres out, the gap in the ring a little shorter, until about round 36 the flaws are as fine as they get, and the fuse shrinks to two seconds by round 40. Every run deals the same materials at the same difficulty in the same order; only the colours, the texture and the spot where the flaw hides change. That makes every run equally hard, so your best score is down to your eyes and your nerve, not to luck.
A correct pick scores 100 points plus a speed bonus of up to 100 for the fuse you had left, multiplied by your streak: every correct pick in a row adds ×0.25, up to ×4 after twelve. A wrong pick or a burnt-out fuse is a strike and resets the multiplier, and three strikes end the run early. Keep your eyes sharp and your streak alive and the score climbs fast. Every run counts, and top scores are verified by replaying your picks on our servers, so every score on the board is real.
On a phone the two samples are stacked: tap the top or the bottom card. On a computer they sit side by side and much bigger: click one, or use the arrow keys, ← or ↑ for the first sample and → or ↓ for the second. Grit & Grain is one of our quick games and reaction games, a short brain game for attention to detail, and a good warm-up for anyone who likes puzzle games that reward a sharp eye more than a long think.

Grit & Grain FAQ
How long does a game of Grit & Grain last?
At most 90 seconds, plus a moment to show the last flaw. Three strikes, wrong picks or burnt-out fuses, end it sooner; a first run often lasts 40 to 70 seconds.
How is the score calculated?
Each correct pick is worth 100 points plus up to 100 for speed, times your streak multiplier, which grows by ×0.25 for every correct pick in a row up to ×4. Strikes score nothing and reset the multiplier.
Is every game equally hard?
Yes. The materials, the size of the flaws and the fuse follow the same schedule in every run; only the colours, the texture and the spot where the flaw hides change, so a perfect player would score exactly the same every time.
Can I play Grit & Grain on my phone?
Yes. It is made for phones and computers alike: tap the flawed card on a phone or tablet, or click it or use the arrow keys on a computer, where the two samples sit side by side.
How is this different from a spot the difference game?
In Double Take you hunt for five changes in a detailed scene with two minutes on the clock. Grit & Grain is a fast two-choice test: one flaw, two samples and about two seconds, round after round.
