How to play Double Take

  1. Compare the two pictures: the second one has exactly five differences.

  2. Tap a difference on either picture to circle it on both.

  3. Do not guess: a wrong tap costs 100 points and 5 seconds of the clock, and taps pause for a second.

  4. Stuck? Press HINT (or H) to circle one difference for 100 points. You have three hints per game.

  5. Find all five to clear the scene and earn a speed bonus; the next scene starts right away.

  6. Clear all five scenes, 25 differences in all, before the two-minute clock runs out.

Tips

  1. Scan in strips: compare one shelf, one row of houses or one strip of sea floor at a time instead of jumping around.

  2. Every scene has one change of each kind. Once you have the missing object and the colour swap, look for something mirrored, resized or with a changed detail.

  3. Check everything that faces one way, such as teapots, cars, fish, cats, dogs and mailboxes: one of them is often mirrored.

  4. Count the countable things: books, candles, fruit, windows, berries, bubbles, tentacles and portholes.

  5. The differences are spread out, so once a corner has a ring the next one is probably somewhere else.

  6. Only tap when you are sure: two wrong taps cost 10 seconds, about as long as finding two differences.

  7. Save your hints for a last difference you cannot see: for the first 30 seconds of a scene its speed bonus drains 10 points a second, so a long search can cost more than a hint.

About Double Take

Double Take is a free online spot the difference game, which some people call find the difference. Two copies of a bright, flat illustrated scene sit side by side on a computer or stacked on a phone, and the second one is not quite the same: a teapot points the other way, a cake has one candle too many, a mug changed colour, a bottle grew, a fruit bowl vanished. Find all five differences in each scene, then do it again in the next one: a kitchen, a busy street, a garden, the bottom of the sea and a cluttered desk, five scenes in all on one two-minute clock. It plays in your browser with no download and no sign-up, on mobile and PC.

Every scene hides exactly one difference of each kind: something missing, a different colour, a different size, something mirrored and a changed detail, like one more book on the shelf or a round clock that turned square. Tap a difference on either picture and a red felt-tip ring draws itself around it on both. Find all five and the scene is stamped clear with a speed bonus, and the next one slides in at once. Nothing is ever pointed out for you: the game never circles a difference on its own, however long you look.

What makes it hard is the clock and the price of a guess. A wrong tap costs 100 points and 5 seconds of the clock, and taps pause for a second, so tapping everywhere is the fastest way to run out of time. Truly stuck? Press HINT (or H on a keyboard): it circles one difference in yellow, scores nothing for it and costs 100 points, and you get three hints per game. The differences are dealt fairly: every scene of every game has the same five kinds of change, each one big enough to see on a phone and spread over different parts of the picture, and a colour change always differs in brightness too, so it shows up even for colour-blind players. That makes every run equally hard and turns the leaderboard into a test of sharp eyes, not luck.

Each difference you find is worth 100 points, and every cleared scene adds a bonus of 100 plus up to 300 more for speed: clear a scene in 10 seconds and the bonus is 300. Find all 25 differences before the clock runs out to post a full clear. The fastest-clear board ranks the real time a clear took: there a miss costs its one-second pause, while the 5 seconds it takes off the clock shorten the time you have left to finish. Top scores are verified by replaying your taps on our servers, so every score on the board is real, and like all our quick games a run lasts two minutes at most.

On a phone, tap the difference on the top or the bottom picture and the HINT button under your thumb; on a computer, click it on the left or the right one and press H for a hint. That is the whole control scheme, which makes Double Take one of the easiest brain games to pick up and one of the best free games to play at work on a short break. Want more puzzles for sharp eyes? Double Take FAQ

  • How long does a game of Double Take last?

Two minutes at most: five scenes on one clock, which every wrong tap shortens by 5 seconds. Find all 25 differences sooner and the run ends there as a full clear.

  • How many differences are there in each picture?

Exactly five in every scene: one missing object, one colour change, one size change, one mirrored object and one changed detail, such as a count or a shape.

  • How is the score calculated?

100 points per difference you find, a bonus of 100 to 400 for each cleared scene depending on how fast you were, minus 100 for every wrong tap and 100 for every hint. A difference a hint circles scores nothing. The score never drops below zero.

  • What happens if I tap the wrong spot?

You lose 100 points and 5 seconds of the clock, and taps pause for one second so a nervous double tap never costs twice. Every miss costs the same.

  • How do hints work?

Only when you ask: tap the HINT button or press H and one difference you have not found yet is circled in yellow. It costs 100 points and earns nothing, and you get three per game. The game never shows a difference by itself.

  • Can I play Double Take on my phone?

Yes. On a phone the two pictures are stacked and you tap with a finger, with the HINT button under your thumb; on a computer they sit side by side, larger, and you click. Every difference is big enough to see and tap on a small screen.

  • Is Double Take free?

Yes. It is free to play in your browser with no download and no sign-up.
