How to play Dig Site
Tap any square of the dig site to stake it; a red-topped peg marks it and the DIG bar names it.
Tap the staked square again, or the DIG bar, to open the trench.
Read the soil: its colour and number say how many squares away the find is, and the strings mark that band.
Look for a pottery shard: it means the find is in the same row, column or diagonal, along the dashed string.
Dig where every trench's clue agrees. Find it within six digs, and the next site is dealt at once.
Find as many as you can before sundown: fewer digs and quicker finds pay more points.
Controls
| Input | Action |

| Touch: tap it again, or the DIG bar | Dig the staked square |
| Mouse: click | Stake a square, then click it again or the DIG bar to dig |
| Arrow keys or WASD | Move the stake one square |
| Enter or Space | Dig the staked square |
Tips
Start near the middle: a central trench splits the site into the most even bands, so the second dig has the least left to cover.
Do not ignore an empty trench: no shard rules out the trench's whole row, column and both diagonals.
Dig a square that would tell the candidates apart, not just one that might be the find. With three candidates left, the middle one often settles it.
A shard is gold: the find is on that line and inside that band, which usually leaves just two squares, one each way.
Keep moving. Each spare dig is worth as much as twelve seconds of speed, so think before you dig, but do not stare at a site for long: there is always another one waiting.

About Dig Site
Dig Site is a free daily treasure hunt game and deduction puzzle, a modern take on the classic hot and cold game, played against the clock. An artefact, a gold coin, a bronze key, a clay oil lamp or an amber bead, is buried somewhere in a 12×12 archaeological dig grid, and you have six digs to find it. Each trench you open reads the soil, and the soil never lies: with careful reasoning you can always find the find in time. Then the next site is dealt, and the next, until the sundown two minutes later. Everyone digs the same sites in the same order that day, a new dig opens every day at midnight ET, and it runs in your browser with no download, which makes it one of our favourite daily puzzle games like Wordle and quick games.
The clues are simple and honest. A trench's soil colour says how far away the find is, counted in rings of squares around it: scorching means it touches the trench, hot is two squares away, warm three, cool four to six and cold seven or more. The band is pegged out with coloured string, so the find always lies between the strings. And when the find is in the same row, column or diagonal as your trench, a pottery shard turns up lying along that line, with a dashed string across the whole site. No shard means the find is not in line with that trench at all. Put two or three trenches together and only one square fits them all: that is where you dig.
Every find pays points: 100 for the find, 40 for every dig you did not need (out of six) and up to 100 for speed, all of it if you find it the moment the site is dealt and none after thirty seconds. A site that keeps its find pays nothing, but the next one is dealt at once. So the sharpest diggers read the clues fast and find each site in three or four digs, and a good day is five to eight finds. The end card stamps your finds and points, shows a chip for every site you dug, and puts you among everyone else's day: how many finds the crowd made and how many of today's diggers you beat on points ("more points than 63% of today's diggers, most found 5"). The share button sends a line like Dig Site #12 · 6 finds · 1,480 points with a row of squares, one per site.
Everyone digs the same sites in the same order each day, with one go each, and your day goes on the leaderboards of our competitive games, which rank the day's points; top results are verified by replaying them on our servers. The first time you play, a ten-second "how clues work" plays on a tiny 5×5 example right under the site.
Dig Site plays the same on a phone or a computer. On a phone, tap a square to stake it and tap it again, or the big DIG bar, to open the trench. With a mouse, click instead; on a keyboard, the arrow keys move the stake and Enter digs. It belongs with our puzzle games, logic puzzles, brain games, mobile games, PC games and casual games for adults, and it is a perfect free game to play at work on a coffee break.

Dig Site FAQ
Is it the same dig for everyone?
Yes. The daily dig is dealt from the day, so everyone digs the same sites in the same order, which is how the end card can show how the crowd did. A new dig opens every day at midnight ET.
Can I always find it in six digs?
Yes, by reasoning alone. Every clue is exact, and a perfect reader is never forced past four digs, on any site and in any square, so six digs leave two to spare. Our tests check this for every square of the grid.
What do the soil colours mean?
They count rings of squares around your trench: scorching red is 1 (touching it), hot orange 2, warm yellow 3, cool green 4 to 6 and cold blue 7 or more. The number on the trench floor says the same, and the coloured strings mark the band.
How is the score worked out?
Each find pays 100 points, plus 40 for every dig you did not need (out of six), plus up to 100 for speed: all of it when you find it right after the site is dealt, falling to none thirty seconds later. A site that keeps its find pays nothing. Your score is the sum over the whole dig day.
How long does a game take?
Two minutes at most: the daylight runs for 1 minute 55 seconds across every site, then the end card. Most diggers find five or six sites in that time.
Can I play Dig Site on my phone?
Yes. It is made for a phone held upright: tap a square to stake it and tap again to dig. It works just as well with a mouse or the keyboard on a computer.
Can I practise without spoiling today's dig?
No. Dig Site is one go a day, so everyone's day is a first try at the same sites. To learn the clues, the first time you play a ten-second example shows how they work on a tiny site.
