How to play Rank It

  1. Read the question and its convention on the notepad, such as most calories per 100 g or farthest north.

  2. Drag the five magnets into order, top to bottom, or tap a magnet and then tap the slot it belongs in.

  3. Press LOCK IT IN before the 19-second timer rings; when it rings, the order on the door counts.

  4. Watch the reveal: the magnets move to their true places with their real values and how far off you were.

  5. Play all five lists, then compare your card with everyone who ranked the same five today.

Tips

  1. Read the convention under the question: per 100 g and per serving give very different orders, and city limits are not the metro area.

  2. Water is the hidden variable in food lists: dried and oily foods carry far more calories per 100 g than fresh ones.

  3. Europe sits much farther north than it feels: Rome is level with Chicago, and London lies north of Calgary.

  4. Place the two you are surest of first, at the top and bottom, then sort the middle three; one slot off still scores 40.

  5. A perfect list doubles the points and adds a speed bonus, so on an easy list it pays to lock in quickly.

About Rank It

Rank It is a free ranking game you play in your browser: five things, one question, put them in order. Which has the most calories, an avocado, a banana or a glazed doughnut? Which city is farthest north, Rome or New York? Which came first, Nintendo or Ford? The five answers sit on a fridge door as word magnets, and you slide them up and down until the order looks right, then lock it in before the tomato timer rings. It is put in order trivia for people who like the moment a fact surprises them, and a higher or lower list game where every list has five rungs instead of two.

The reveal is the fun part. The magnets slide into their true order, each one gets its real value stamped on a yellow label, and a badge shows how far off you were: a green tick for the right spot, an arrow and a number when it belongs higher or lower. Every list hides at least one surprise: a red bell pepper has more vitamin C than an orange, Buenos Aires lies farther south than Sydney, Venus spins so slowly that its day is longer than its year. A short line on the notepad tells you why, and on Gamefinity you also see how everyone else ranked the same five today, for example that most people put the orange first.

Every value has a source. Calories, sugar, caffeine, vitamin C, protein and salt come from USDA FoodData Central, per 100 g or per stated serving; heights, populations, areas, lengths, dates and coordinates come from Wikidata, and each list says its convention on the card, such as city limits rather than the metro area. Lists were only kept when every figure the source holds keeps the same order and the neighbours are clearly apart, so there are no near-ties and no trick answers.

A run is five lists, from an easy warm-up to a trap at the end. Each magnet in its true place scores 100 points and one slot off scores 40; a perfect list is worth 1,000 plus a bonus for the seconds left on the timer, so the best runs are both right and quick. On Gamefinity everyone's casual run of the day deals the same five lists, so you can compare your card with friends; ranked attempts deal lists of their own and are verified by replaying them on our servers for the boards of our competitive games.

It plays the same on any screen. On a phone or tablet, drag a magnet with your thumb, or tap one and then tap where it belongs; with a mouse, drag or click; on a keyboard, the arrow keys move between magnets, Space picks one up and puts it down, and Enter locks the order in. A full run takes about a minute and a half, which makes it one of our quick games and a natural partner for our other quiz games. It is also one of our casual games for adults, and you will find more among our mobile games and PC games.

Rank It FAQ

  • How long does a game of Rank It take?

A run is five lists of five things. You have 19 seconds to rank each list, and most runs take about a minute to a minute and a half including the reveals.

  • How is the score calculated?

Each thing in its true place scores 100 points and one place off scores 40. A perfect list is worth 1,000 points plus 10 for every second left on the timer, so a perfect, quick run scores close to 6,000.

  • Where do the numbers come from?

Food values come from USDA FoodData Central, per 100 g or per stated serving. Everything else comes from Wikidata, the open database behind Wikipedia, and each card names its convention so every list has one honest order.

  • Is it the same lists every day?

On Gamefinity, casual runs deal the same five lists to everyone on a given day, so you can compare cards with friends and see how today's players ranked them. Ranked attempts deal lists of their own.

  • Can I play Rank It on my phone?

Yes. It works on phones, tablets and computers: drag or tap the magnets on a touch screen, use a mouse, or play with the arrow keys, Space and Enter.
