How to play Unpark

  1. Tap or click the start screen: the first parking lot rolls in, with the red car on its row and the exit gap with yellow chevrons at the end of it.

  2. Press on a car or truck and drag it along its lane to make room. Vehicles only slide forwards and backwards, never sideways, and stop against whatever is in the way.

  3. Keep freeing the red car's row, then drag the red car into the exit gap to drive it out of the lot.

  4. Watch the moves counter beside the lot's par: matching the par earns the efficiency bonus. UNDO takes a move back, and HINT makes one best move once it has charged.

  5. Clear as many lots as you can before the two-minute clock runs out; each new lot needs one move more than the last, up to fifteen.

Touch: press and drag a vehicleSlide it along its lane; it snaps into a stall when you let go
Touch: drag the red car into the gapDrive it out and clear the lot
Touch: UNDOHINT buttonsTake back the last move / make one best move (after 10 s)
Mouse: click and dragThe same as touch, including the buttons
Arrow keys or WASDSlide the selected vehicle along its lane, or select the nearest one across it
SpaceSelect the next vehicle
Z or BackspaceHUndo / take the hint

Tips

  1. Work backwards from the exit: find the vehicle blocking the red car's row, then ask what blocks that vehicle, and so on until you reach one that can move now.

  2. A truck in three cells across the red car's row can usually leave it in only one direction, so check which end has room before you drag it.

  3. Slide each vehicle all the way in one drag when you know where it must go: pushing the same car on in a second drag right after is still one move, but moving another car in between costs a new one.

  4. Do not take the hint at the first sign of trouble on an easy lot: the efficiency bonus is half the lot's points, and a few seconds of thinking usually find the way.

  5. On the hard lots, take the hint as soon as you are truly stuck: a cleared lot without its bonus is worth far more than a lot left unfinished when the clock runs out.

About Unpark

Unpark is a free unblock car puzzle you play in your browser: a packed parking lot seen from above, a red car stuck in the middle of it and an exit gap at the end of its row. Every car and truck can only slide forwards or backwards along its own lane, never sideways and never turning, so the only way out is to work out which vehicle has to move first, which one that frees, and in what order the whole traffic jam untangles. It is the classic sliding block puzzle on a 6×6 grid, the rush-hour-style parking jam puzzle, drawn as a bright cartoon parking lot with chunky cars, box trucks and buses, and cut down to a quick two-minute run.

A run is a string of lots against one clock. The first lot needs just two moves: slide the car that blocks the red one, then drive out. As soon as the red car zooms through the gap the next lot rolls in, and every lot needs exactly one move more than the one before, from easy warm-ups through medium and hard jams to expert lots with fifteen moves; from the fourteenth lot on, every lot needs fifteen. Every lot has a known best solution, worked out by a computer search when the puzzles were made, so the game can show you the par for each one: a move counts every time a vehicle slides somewhere new, however far it goes.

Scoring rewards both clean thinking and speed. A lot pays 100 points for every move of its par, so later lots are worth far more, and solving it in exactly the par adds an efficiency bonus of half as much again, minus 50 for each extra move. Undo takes back a slip but never refunds the move, and the hint, which charges for ten seconds, makes one best move for you at the cost of that lot's bonus. Speed pays through the clock: the faster a lot falls, the sooner you reach the next, better-paying one. Every seed deals lots of exactly the same difficulty in every slot, so every run and every leaderboard is fair, and top runs are replayed on our servers before they count, which puts Unpark among our competitive games.

The controls are made for a thumb. On a phone, press on any vehicle and drag it along its lane: it follows your finger over the free stalls, stops against whatever blocks it and snaps into place when you let go. On a computer, click and drag the same way, or play with the keyboard: the arrow keys select and slide vehicles, Space picks the next one, Z undoes and H takes the hint. It plays just as well on mobile as on a PC, with nothing to download.

If you enjoy logic puzzles where one good move opens up the next, Unpark sits alongside the other puzzle games and the short challenges on the brain games page, and it is the thinking member of our car games. A run lasts two minutes, so it is also one of our quick games and a good pick among the free games to play at work. New to parking puzzles? The first lots teach you everything, and after a few runs you will start to see the patterns: trucks that must go down before cars can go up, and the one car that unlocks a whole row.

Unpark FAQ

  • How long does a game of Unpark last?

Two minutes of play, then a short time's-up card. In that time you clear as many lots as you can; a first run usually clears four to six, and a strong one ten or more.

  • How is the score calculated?

Each cleared lot pays 100 points per move of its par. Solving it in exactly the par adds half as much again, and each extra move takes 50 off that bonus. A lot where you used the hint pays its points without the bonus, and the lot left unfinished at the end pays nothing.

  • What counts as a move?

Every time a vehicle slides to a new place, however far it goes. Pushing the same vehicle on again right after is still the same move, undo never gives a move back, and the red car's drive out of the lot counts too.

  • Are the puzzles always solvable, and is every run equally hard?

Yes. Every lot was checked by a computer search, which also found its par, the fewest moves that solve it. Lot one always needs two moves, lot two three, and so on up to fifteen moves from lot fourteen on, whatever puzzle you are dealt.

  • Can I play Unpark on my phone?

Yes. Unpark is made for touch: drag the cars with one finger and tap the two buttons under the lot. On a computer you can drag with the mouse or play with the keyboard.
