How to play Synonym Sprint

  1. Read the word on the sun in the middle of the chart.

  2. Read the words on the planets around it: one of them means the same.

  3. Tap or click that planet, or press its number (1 to 5).

  4. A right answer scores points and puts 2 seconds back on the clock; the next word comes at once.

  5. One wrong pick ends the run, and so does an empty clock. A fourth planet joins at the 10th word and a fifth at the 25th.

Tips

  1. Read the sun first, then every planet before you tap. One wrong pick ends the run, so a sure answer half a second later beats a fast guess.

  2. Rule out the obvious misses. The wrong answers have nothing to do with the prompt in any sense, so if you are unsure, drop the ones that clearly do not fit and compare what is left.

  3. Keep an eye on the clock dial. Each right answer is worth 2 seconds, so answering in about a second keeps it full; with five planets and harder words it drains if you hesitate.

  4. Answer early when you know it. The speed bonus fades over three seconds, so a quick right answer is worth more points as well as more time.

  5. On a computer, rest your fingers on 1 to 5. Pressing a number is faster than moving the mouse, especially once five planets are on the chart.

  6. Watch the coral ring around the chart: it glows brighter when the clock is nearly empty, which is the moment to commit to your best answer rather than stare.

About Synonym Sprint

Synonym Sprint is a free synonym game you play in your browser, and the fastest vocabulary test on Gamefinity. A word lands on a bright sun in the middle of a printed star chart and planets pop up around it, each carrying a word. One of them means the same as the word on the sun. Tap it, and the next word lands a moment later. Nothing moves while you read: the planets stand still in their places, so all you have to do is know your words, and know them fast. It is a word association game and a synonym quiz in one, played against a clock that never stops.

The clock starts at 25 seconds and every right answer puts 2 seconds back, up to 30 seconds on the dial. There are no second chances: one wrong pick ends the run. The planet you picked is crossed out, the right synonym is stamped on the sun, and the end card shows the pair so you learn it for next time. Every run starts with three planets. A fourth joins at the 10th word and a fifth at the 25th, so the deeper you go the more words you have to read and rule out. The words get harder too: the first prompts are everyday pairs like BIG and LARGE or BEGIN and START; then come trickier words, and further in the less common ones, like FRUGAL and THRIFTY or CANDID and FRANK. A quick, careful reader keeps the clock full; a slow one watches it drain.

The word bank was written by hand for this game: 337 synonym pairs, each with a hand-picked set of wrong answers. Every wrong answer was checked against every meaning of both words, so you never lose a run to an arguable option: FAST also means firmly fixed, so FIRM never appears beside it, and BRIGHT also means clever, so SMART never does. No word comes back twice in the same run, and every run follows the same order of difficulty, so no run is easier than another.

Scoring rewards knowing your words and knowing them fast. A right answer is worth 100, 150 or 200 points depending on the word's difficulty, multiplied by your streak: ×2 from four right in a row, ×3 from eight, ×4 from twelve and ×5 from sixteen. Since one mistake ends the run, every right answer keeps the streak alive. A speed bonus of up to 60 points fades over the first three seconds after the planets appear. Endless is the main mode: no time limit but your clock, so a strong player can keep going for minutes, until the first slip or until all 240 words of a run are answered. Timed is the same game inside a two-minute run, and it is the version you meet in Swipe mode and gauntlets. Each mode has its own leaderboards on our competitive games, and top scores are verified by replaying the run on our servers.

Synonym Sprint plays the same on a phone, a tablet or a computer. On a touch screen, tap the planet; with a mouse, click it; on a keyboard, press 1 to 5, the number printed on each planet, which is the quickest way to play on a desktop, and Escape pauses. On a wide screen the star chart takes most of the room and the score and the clock sit beside it. There is nothing to download and no sign-up. It is one of our word games and brain games, a natural pick among the quick games and reaction games, and it works as one of our mobile games and PC games. Synonym Sprint FAQ

  • How long does a game of Synonym Sprint last?

As long as you keep getting words right and keep time on the clock. The clock starts at 25 seconds and every right answer adds 2 seconds, up to 30; the first wrong answer ends the run. Most runs last between half a minute and two minutes; a strong player can go on for several minutes in Endless. The Timed mode never lasts longer than two minutes.

  • What happens if I pick the wrong word?

The run ends. The planet you picked is crossed out, the right synonym is ringed and stamped on the sun, and the end card shows the pair with your score and your streak, so you learn it for next time.

  • How is the score calculated?

Each right answer is worth 100, 150 or 200 points depending on the word's difficulty, multiplied by your streak (×2 from four in a row up to ×5 from sixteen), plus a speed bonus of up to 60 points that fades over three seconds.

  • Why are there more planets later on?

Every run starts with three planets to choose from. A fourth joins at the 10th word and a fifth at the 25th, so the deeper you get, the more words you have to read and rule out before you answer.

  • What is the difference between Endless and Timed?

They are the same game. Endless has no time limit except your clock, so a run goes on until your first wrong answer or until the clock runs dry. Timed stops after two minutes at the most; it is the version played in Swipe mode and gauntlets. Each has its own leaderboards.

  • Can a wrong answer also be a synonym?

No. Every prompt has exactly one synonym among its options. The wrong answers were picked by hand for each word and checked against every meaning of the prompt and of its synonym, so none of them means the same in any sense.

  • Do I get the same words every time?

No. Each run draws different words, wrong answers and positions from the bank of 337 pairs, and no word repeats within a run. The difficulty order is the same in every run, so every run is equally hard: everyday words first, harder ones later.

  • Can I play Synonym Sprint on my phone?

Yes. Synonym Sprint works in any modern mobile browser: tap the planets. On a computer you can click them or press 1 to 5 on the keyboard.
