How to play Paint by Nation
Read the card: it names the country whose flag you have to paint.
Tap a paint pot (or press 1 to 8 on a keyboard) to load that paint on your brush.
Tap the part of the flag that has that colour: every part of the same colour fills at once. Tap a painted part with another paint to repaint it.
When every part is painted and the flag looks right, tap Submit (or press Enter). The flag is marked: ticks for the right parts, crosses and the true colour for the wrong ones.
Keep going: a flag with a mistake costs one of your three lives, and the run ends with the third, or when you have painted every flag.
Choose Easy for only the flag's own colours, or Hard for eight paints with look-alike shades.

Tips
Start with the colour you are surest of: once one part is right, the layout of the rest usually comes back to you.
Nothing is judged until you submit, so paint the whole flag, look at it, and repaint any part that looks wrong before you press Submit.
Watch the look-alikes. Ireland is green, white and orange from the flagpole out, and Ivory Coast is the same flag reversed; Mali is green, yellow and red, and Guinea is red, yellow and green.
In Hard, the shades matter. Luxembourg's bottom stripe is light blue, while the Netherlands' is blue; Qatar and Latvia are maroon, not red; Armenia's third stripe is orange.
Use the emblem as a clue: a coat of arms or a seal is already in colour, and its position often tells you which country's flag you are looking at.
Protect the streak on the famous flags at the start: five perfect flags in a row are worth a 500-point bonus on every following perfect flag.
On a computer, keep your fingers on the 1 to 8 keys and Enter and the mouse on the flag: it is much faster than clicking the pots.

About Paint by Nation
Paint by Nation is a free flag quiz where you paint the answer instead of picking it. The card names a country, its flag appears as a blank pencil outline, and you colour it in from memory: load a paint from the pots, tap the part of the flag it belongs to, and watch the paint flood across it. When the flag looks right, press Submit and it is marked part by part. It is a paint the flag game, a flag coloring game and a flags of the world quiz in one, it covers the flags of all 195 countries (the 193 members of the United Nations plus Vatican City and Palestine), and it plays in your browser with nothing to download. If you like to guess the flag by color, this is that game turned around: we name the country, and you supply every colour of its flag.
Each flag is drawn on its real proportions with its real layout, from Nordic crosses and the stars of China to the crescent of Turkey, the sun of Kiribati and the Union Jack in the canton of Australia, and in its own true shades: Japan's crimson is not Canada's red, and Luxembourg's sky blue is not the darker blue of the Netherlands. Flags with a coat of arms, a seal or an emblem show it already in full colour, so you only paint the fields, stripes and shapes around it: Spain's arms, Mexico's eagle on its cactus, Cambodia's Angkor Wat and Brazil's starry globe are there to help you place the colours.
There are two ways to play on this page. Easy gives you only the flag's own colours, so the question is where each one goes: is Ireland green, white and orange from the flagpole out, or is that Ivory Coast? Hard gives you eight paints, the flag's colours among look-alike shades, so you also have to know which colours it has: red or maroon for Qatar, blue or light blue for Botswana, yellow or orange for Armenia. Both have no clock and three lives: every flag you submit with a mistake costs a life, and the run ends with the third, or when you have painted every flag in the world. A run starts with famous flags like Japan, France, Germany and the United Kingdom and works its way to the ones only real flag fans can paint without a slip, from Kiribati to Eswatini.
Scoring is simple. Every part painted in its true colour is worth 100 points. A perfect flag adds a bonus of 100 points, 200 for two perfect flags in a row, and so on up to 500 for five or more, shown as the streak stars at the top of the screen. Mistakes never take points away, but they cost a life and reset the streak. Every run deals the flags in the same order of difficulty, so every run is equally fair: play as often as you like and climb the Easy and Hard leaderboards of our competitive games, where top scores are verified by replaying the run. A 90-second version with the Hard paints plays in Swipe mode.
Paint by Nation plays the same on a phone, a tablet or a computer. On a touch screen, tap a paint pot, tap the flag, then tap Submit; with a mouse, click them. On a keyboard the keys 1 to 8 load the paints in the order of the pots and Enter submits the flag. Each pot is labelled with its colour name, so the game never relies on colour alone. It is one of our mobile games and PC games, and one of our flag games.

Paint by Nation FAQ
Is Paint by Nation timed?
No. On its own page there is no clock: you have three lives, a flag you submit with a mistake costs one, and the run lasts until the third mistake or until you have painted every flag. A separate 90-second timed version plays in Swipe mode.
What is the difference between Easy and Hard?
Easy only offers the flag's own colours, so you decide where each one goes. Hard offers eight paints: the flag's colours, their look-alikes (red with maroon and orange, blue with light blue) and others, so you also decide which colours the flag has. Each mode has its own leaderboard.
Which flags are in the quiz?
All 195: the flags of the 193 member states of the United Nations and of its two observer states, Vatican City and Palestine. Where a coat of arms, a seal, writing or a detailed emblem is part of the flag, it is drawn already in colour and you paint the rest.
How is the score calculated?
Each part of a flag painted in its true colour is worth 100 points. A perfect flag adds a bonus of 100 points times your perfect streak, up to 500 from five perfect flags in a row. Wrong colours never take points away, but they cost a life and reset the streak.
Why does painting one part also fill other parts?
Every part of a flag that shares a colour is painted together, so one tap fills both red bars and the maple leaf of Canada. That keeps every flag with the same number of colours equally quick to paint.
Do I get the same flags every time?
The same flags, in a different order. Each run deals the countries at random, but always in the same order of difficulty: famous flags first, then well-known ones, then the hard ones, so every run is equally fair.
Can I play Paint by Nation on my phone?
Yes. Paint by Nation works in any modern mobile browser: tap a paint pot, tap the flag, then tap Submit. On a computer you can click with the mouse, load paints with the keys 1 to 8 and submit with Enter.
