About Flag Games
Flags are one of the most popular ways to learn geography. Almost every country has one, most are built from a few simple shapes (stripes, crosses, triangles, circles and stars) in a handful of colours, and yet many are easy to mix up: Chad and Romania are almost identical, Ireland and Côte d'Ivoire are mirror images, and a good part of Europe is three stripes. Flag quizzes have been a classroom favourite for as long as there have been atlases.
Paint by Nation turns the flag quiz around: instead of naming a flag, you paint it. A country's name appears with its flag as a blank outline, and you fill it from memory with paint pots in the flag's own shades, then submit it when it looks right. One tap fills every part of a colour, the flag is marked part by part, and the real flag is shown after every answer, so each run teaches you a few more. On its page there is no clock: you have three lives, in Easy (only the flag's own colours) or Hard (eight paints with look-alike shades), and a 90-second Timed version plays in Swipe mode. A perfect flag earns a bonus, and perfect flags in a row build a streak.
Every country's flag is there, all 195, from well-known flags at the start of a run to the hardest ones later, with coats of arms and emblems already drawn in. Play free in your browser on a phone, tablet or computer. For more geography, try Capital Sprint for world capitals and Pin Drop for places on the map, or see all the geography games and quiz games.
Frequently asked questions
How do you play a paint the flag game?
Read the country's name, pick a paint and tap the part of the blank flag it belongs to. When every part is painted, submit it: the flag is marked, and the real flag is shown so you can learn the ones you missed.
Which flags are in Paint by Nation?
All 195: the flags of the 193 member states of the United Nations, Vatican City and Palestine. Coats of arms, seals and emblems are drawn in colour for you, and you paint the fields, stripes and shapes around them.
How can I learn the flags of the world faster?
Group them: the three-stripe flags of Europe and Africa, the Nordic crosses, the flags with a triangle at the hoist. Then learn the one detail that tells each pair apart, such as the order of the stripes or the shade of blue.
Can I play on my phone?
Yes. Tap a paint pot, tap the flag, then tap Submit. On a computer you can click, or press the keys 1 to 8 to pick a paint and Enter to submit.
