Platform Games

About Platform Games

Platform games, or platformers, are about moving through a world built from ledges, gaps and steps: run, jump at the right moment, land on the next platform and keep going. The genre grew up on arcade machines and home consoles, and it stretches from pure jumping challenges to run and gun games where you shoot your way across the level. What every platformer shares is a feel for movement. Each jump is a small decision about distance and timing, and a level you know well becomes something you can run without stopping.

Robo Raid is our run and gun platformer. Charge through a robot factory from left to right, jump gaps, steps and catwalks, and keep firing at walkers, shielded gunners, drones and turrets, with spread, rapid-fire and grenade capsules along the way. Three campaign stages each end with a boss, from the Scrap Crusher to the Core Titan, the campaign plays all three in one run with one score, and the Endless Raid builds new rooms until your last life is gone. Quillstorm is a pixel-art porcupine roguelite on side-on arenas of branches and ledges, where you run, jump, drop through platforms and fire your own quills at critters pouring in from the ground and the sky. Upside Run turns the platformer on its head: your runner never stops, and instead of jumping you flip gravity to cross between floor, ceiling, floating ledges and short islands.

Robo Raid and Upside Run play on a phone as well as a computer: Robo Raid draws a move pad and FIRE and JUMP buttons for two thumbs in landscape, and Upside Run needs one tap. Quillstorm is labeled Desktop only and plays with a keyboard and mouse. All three are free in your browser with no download. For more leaps, see the jumping games; for more firepower, the shooting games and action games.

Frequently asked questions

  • What is a platform game?

A game where you move a character through a level of platforms, gaps and obstacles, usually by running and jumping. Many add shooting, collecting or puzzles, but getting from one ledge to the next is always at the heart of it.

  • What is a run and gun game?

A platformer where you shoot while you run and jump, usually through a side-scrolling level full of enemies. Robo Raid is one: your shots aim at the nearest robot in front of you, so the skill is in moving, jumping and timing.

  • Can I play platform games on my phone?

Robo Raid and Upside Run, yes. Turn the phone sideways for Robo Raid's move pad and FIRE and JUMP buttons, and tap anywhere to flip gravity in Upside Run. Quillstorm is Desktop only, because it is played with a keyboard and mouse.

  • How many levels does Robo Raid have?

Three campaign stages, Scrap Yard, Foundry and Core Tower, each with a boss at the end, played straight through as one run. The Endless Raid is open from the start too.
