How to play Upside Run

  1. Your runner sprints to the right on their own; you only control gravity.

  2. Tap, click or press Space to flip gravity: the runner falls up to the ceiling or down to the floor.

  3. You can flip only while standing on a surface (or a split second after running off one); a tap just before you land flips on landing.

  4. Be on the other side when a gap or a spike strip passes, and flip before a striped wall so it does not hold you back.

  5. In the open sections, hop between floating ledges and short islands with quick flips, landing on each before it ends.

  6. Collect gems for points and keep a streak going for ×2 and ×3, and do not fall behind: the Warden grabs runners who lag.

Tips

  1. Read the screen, not your feet: the course is visible well ahead, so decide early which side you need to be on for the next section and get there during the calm stretch before it.

  2. In a zigzag, flip near the end of the surface you are on, not at its start: you need to land past the hole on the other side, and an early flip drops you into it.

  3. Taps are buffered, so for a quick double flip (land and go straight back) you can tap a fraction before you land instead of waiting to touch down.

  4. Walls do not kill, but they cost ground. If you get stuck on one, flip at once: you climb the wall face and sprint back to your place before the Warden reaches you.

  5. Gems mark the safe route, and the lone gem between two surfaces marks the middle of a well-timed flip: aim your flips through it. Over the floating ledges the gems follow one route, so switch to that side before the section starts.

About Upside Run

Upside Run is a gravity flip runner you play free in your browser. Your courier sprints along a space-station corridor on their own, and the only thing you control is gravity: one tap and they fall up to the ceiling, another and they drop back to the floor. It is a one-button gravity switch game in the spirit of the classic gravity runners, with a flat, bold look of gold floors, cyan ceilings, red spikes and mint gems under a ringed planet, and no download or sign-up.

Every couple of seconds the surface under your feet runs out. A gap in the floor means you need to be on the ceiling when it passes; a strip of spikes means the same; a zigzag opens the floor and the ceiling one after the other, so you must flip at just the right moment to land past the hole; a hazard-striped wall stops you dead if you meet it, and in the open sections you hop between floating ledges and short islands with quick half flips. A flip is a committed half-second arc: tap too early and you fall into the gap you were dodging, too late and you run off the edge into the void. Taps are never lost: press a moment before you land and the flip fires the instant your feet touch down.

Behind you hovers the Warden, a stout violet robot with one yellow eye and a grabbing claw. Whenever a wall holds you back you fall behind the camera, its siren starts flashing and the claw reaches for you; run clear and you sprint back to your place. Fall out of the corridor, touch the spikes or let the Warden catch you and the run is over. The course is generated in pieces that are always passable, and it gets faster every five seconds and denser every sector: plain gaps first, then spikes and walls, ledges, islands and spiked ledges that decide your route before you enter.

Your score is the distance you run in meters plus the gems you collect. Gems line the safe route and mark the middle of the perfect flip, every run gets the same number of them for the distance, and collecting them without missing one builds a streak: ten in a row doubles every gem, twenty-five triples it. You play Endless: no clock, just a run that goes until you fall, so it is a pure test of how long you can keep it up, and with a decent run lasting one to three minutes it is one of our quick games. A 90-second sprint on the same course is one of the games The Daily can deal you. Your best run goes on the all-time and weekly leaderboards, and top runs are verified by replaying your inputs on our servers.

Upside Run plays on every device. On a phone, tap anywhere on the screen to flip; held upright, the corridor sits in the middle with big numbers above and below it, and held sideways it fills the screen. On a computer, click or press Space, Enter or the arrow keys, and press P to pause. It sits with our other endless runner games, one-button games, gravity games and reaction games in the arcade games section, and you can find it among both the mobile games and the PC games.

Upside Run FAQ

  • How long does a game of Upside Run last?

As long as you do: there is no clock, and the course keeps speeding up and tightening until you fall. A decent run lasts one to three minutes, and the speed climbs every five seconds and tops out after four minutes.

  • How is the score calculated?

One point for every meter you run plus 5 points per gem. Collect 10 gems in a row without missing one and each gem is worth 10, from 25 in a row each is worth 15; missing a gem resets the streak. Nothing is ever taken away.

  • Can I flip gravity in mid-air?

No, like the classic gravity runners you can only flip while standing on the floor, the ceiling or a ledge, or in the split second after running off an edge. If you tap in the air just before landing, the flip happens the moment you touch down.

  • What happens if I hit a wall?

Walls stop you without hurting you, but the camera keeps scrolling, so you fall behind and the Warden robot closes in. Flip off the wall quickly and you sprint back to your place; stay stuck too long and the Warden grabs you.

  • Is every run equally hard?

Yes. Every run follows the same speed schedule and meets the same mix of sections in each sector with the same timing windows; the seed only shuffles their order and sizes, and every run carries the same number of gems for the distance it covers. Every section is checked to be passable.

  • Can I play Upside Run on my phone?

Yes. Tap anywhere on the screen to flip gravity. It works with the phone held sideways or upright, and on a computer you can click or use Space, Enter or the arrow keys, with P to pause.
