About the Grit & Grain leaderboard

A fast odd-one-out test for your eyes: two samples of the same material, one hiding a tiny flaw. Tap the flawed one before its fuse burns down.

This board ranks every signed-in player’s best verified score in Grit & Grain of all time. Each player is listed once, with their best run: a better run replaces it, a worse one leaves it where it is.

How a run scores

  • Tap or click the flawed sample, or press ← or ↑ for the first and → or ↓ for the second, before the fuse burns down.
  • Keep picking right to grow your streak multiplier up to ×4; a wrong pick or a burnt-out fuse is a strike.
  • Last the 90-second clock without three strikes for the best score.

How to climb the board

  • Do not comb both cards inch by inch. Rest your eyes on the middle of one card and let whatever breaks the pattern jump out; if nothing does after a moment, it is probably the other card.
  • Learn each material's flaw: a long bar in the weave, a gap in a tree ring, a wedge of grout around a tile, a lump in the sandpaper, a fat dot in the halftone. The label above the cards tells you which one is coming.
  • Speed is worth up to double points, but a strike costs your whole streak multiplier. On the subtle later rounds an extra half second is cheaper than a wrong guess.

Periods, ties and checks

All-time keeps each player’s best since the board opened. This week starts again every Monday at midnight New York time.

Equal scores share a place, and the run finished first is listed first.

A run records only your inputs. Our server plays them again with the same game code, and only a score the replay matches is verified.

The board lists every player, guests under their generated name. Sign in with Google or Apple from a result to keep your scores and pick your own name. Bots, scripts and other automated or assisted play are not allowed (see our terms of use).
