About Basketball Games

Basketball is a game of rhythm and touch, and the purest part of it is the shot: square up, release and watch the ball drop through the net. Basketball shooting games are built around that moment. Instead of five on five you get a hoop, a ball and one gesture that has to be just right, with more points for range, a bonus for a clean swish and a hot streak that makes every shot a little more tense than the last. They are some of the quickest sports games to pick up and some of the hardest to put down.

Swish Shot is our basketball game: an outdoor court at dusk with a real rim, backboard and net. Flick up toward the hoop and let go: the speed of the flick is the power and its direction is the aim, and a green ring flashes when you hit a perfect release. After every shot you move to a new spot round the arc, from close shots and bank angles on the wings to three-pointers behind the line. A basket scores 200, or 300 from deep; a swish or a bank shot is worth half again, three makes in a row set the ball on fire for double points and six for triple. Later in the evening the wind blows across the court and the hoop starts to slide along the baseline. Endless gives you three hearts, and every four makes in a row win one back; a 60-second Shootout on the same court, the classic race to make as many baskets as you can before the buzzer, is one of the games The Daily can deal.

Basketball games on Gamefinity are free in your browser with no download: flick with one thumb on a phone, or drag the mouse up quickly and release on a computer. The Shootout puts Swish Shot among our quick games, and the game's leaderboards sit with the competitive games. For more games of one well-judged shot, see the flick games and the aim games; the sports games page has soccer, bowling, archery and more.

Frequently asked questions

  • How do you shoot in Swish Shot?

Put your finger or the mouse on the ball, swipe up toward the hoop and let go as you reach the rim, while still moving; your first shots show the way. Flick faster for long shots and softer for close ones, and tilt the flick left or right to aim into the wind or at the backboard.

  • What is a swish?

A shot that drops through without touching the rim or the backboard: nothing but net. In Swish Shot a swish, like a bank shot off the backboard, is worth one and a half times a normal basket.

  • What does on fire mean?

Make three shots in a row and the ball catches fire: every basket counts double. Make six in a row and it counts triple. The next miss puts the fire out.

  • Can I play basketball games on my phone?

Yes. Swish Shot is made for phones: flick the ball up with one thumb anywhere on the screen. It also plays with a mouse on a computer, by dragging up quickly and letting go.
