How to play Halfway
Read what the round wants: cut it in half, or cut off exactly a third, a quarter or a tenth. The card, the coloured frame and the TARGET split under the shape all say it.
Press anywhere, drag a straight line across the shape and let go. The dashed guide shows the whole cut while you drag.
The shape splits along your line and each piece shows its share of the area. The small piece counts: the closer it is to the target, the more points, up to 1,000.
Five cuts: cut all five shapes, including a spinning one, then read your splits and your total out of 5,000 on the score card.
Endless: keep cutting. A cut past the way-off line, or a round that runs out of time, is a strike; three strikes end the run.

Tips
Any direction works: every direction has exactly one line that gives the right split. Pick the direction you can judge best, often straight across the short side of a long shape.
Do not trust the middle of the outline. On a lopsided shape the half line sits closer to the bulky end than the outline suggests, so move your line toward the heavier side.
Holes count as nothing and separate pieces all count. Judge the paper, not the frame around it: the holes in the cheese, the middle of a donut, Sicily next to Italy.
For a third, a quarter or a tenth, cut a sliver off the side where it is easiest to judge; the small piece may be on either side of your line.
On a spinning shape the cut is judged the moment you let go, so drag quickly and lift when the shape is where you aimed.
On a blind round, study the shape and the grid before you press: the bold mat lines cross at the centre of the shape's frame and make good landmarks.
Take your time. Speed scores nothing, a missed line costs nothing but seconds, and Endless only gets stricter as you go.

About Halfway
Halfway is a free online cut shapes in half game: one straight cut, two pieces, and the only question that matters is how close to 50/50 you got. A paper rubber duck, a croissant, a slice of Swiss cheese or the boot of Italy lies on a cutting mat; you press, drag a line across it and let go. The shape splits along your line, the pieces slide apart and their shares of the area pop up: 49.6 | 50.4. It is a quick test of how good your eye really is, it runs in your browser with no download, and a run takes well under a minute, which makes it one of our favourite quick games.
There are 158 shapes in seven sets: food (pizza, a pretzel with three holes, a bitten cookie), animals (a cat, an octopus, a giraffe), countries and US states drawn from real map outlines (Italy, Japan, Chile, Norway, Texas, Michigan, Hawaii and its islands), everyday objects (a teapot, scissors, glasses), letters and numbers, landmarks (the Eiffel Tower, the pyramids, a torii gate) and tricky geometry (a spiral, a gear, a star, an off-centre ring). Holes count for nothing, separate pieces all count, and shapes with an obvious mirror line never appear in a half round, so there is no free axis to cut along.
Rounds do not always ask for a half. The default run, Five cuts, deals a friendly half, a tricky half, then cut off exactly a third, a half on a spinning shape and finally cut off exactly a quarter. Every round that is not a plain half says so loudly: a card over the shape, a coloured frame around the mat and the target split under the shape, and the result shows the target above your cut, so a perfect half on a quarter round reads WRONG SIZE and tells you why. The small piece always counts, on either side of the line. At the end a score card lists all five splits and your total out of 5,000, ready for a screenshot or the share button. Played for fun, Five cuts gives everyone the same five shapes each day: after each cut you see where everyone else cut that shape today, and how many of them you beat.
Endless keeps the shapes coming until three cuts are way off. New round types arrive as you go (quarters, thirds, spinning shapes, a tenth, and blind cuts where the shape hides the moment you press), the line for way off tightens from 4 % to 1.5 % and the clock shortens, so every run ends somewhere. Its leaderboard ranks how many shapes you got through. Scoring is steep in both modes: a perfect half is worth 1,000 points, 49.9 | 50.1 about 900, 49.0 about 460 and a cut that is 10 % off nothing, and speed adds nothing because precision is the whole game. Every ranked run is re-simulated on our servers, which puts Halfway among our competitive games.
The area rule is simple and exact: your cut is the whole straight line through the two points you drew, and each side's share is all the paper on that side, however many pieces a concave shape falls into. The game measures every shape as an exact polygon, so the percentages are not an estimate, and it plays the same with a finger on a phone or a mouse on a computer. It is a precision game and a little geometry lesson in disguise, which is why you will also find it among our brain games, skill games, aim games, mobile games, PC games and casual games for adults.

Halfway FAQ
How long does a game of Halfway take?
The default run, Five cuts, is five shapes and takes about half a minute (each shape has a 15-second clock, so even a slow run ends within about a minute and a half). Endless lasts until three cuts are way off; most players get through 10 to 30 shapes in a few minutes.
How is the score calculated?
Each cut scores up to 1,000 points from how far the small piece is from the target: an exact 50.00 | 50.00 is 1,000, 49.9 | 50.1 about 900, 49.0 | 51.0 about 460, and 10 % off or more nothing. Five cuts adds the five cuts up, out of 5,000. Endless ranks how many shapes you got through before your third strike, then your points.
Why did a near-perfect half say WRONG SIZE?
That round asked for something else: cutting off a quarter, a third or a tenth. The card at the start of the round, the coloured frame around the mat and the TARGET under the shape show what each round wants, and the result repeats the target above your split.
Why do some results show two decimals?
Within 0.15 % of the target the game shows hundredths of a percent, because that is what the score measures: 49.96 | 50.04 is a superb cut worth 960 points, and only an exact 50.00 | 50.00 is a perfect 1,000.
What happens if my line misses the shape?
Nothing is lost: a line that does not cross the shape, or a drag too short to count, is not a cut, and you can try again while the clock runs. Only when the clock runs out without a cut does the shape score zero (and count as a strike in Endless).
How is the area of each side measured?
Your cut is the whole straight line through the two points you drew. Each side's share is all the paper on that side of the line, even when a shape falls into several pieces, and holes count as nothing. Shapes are exact polygons, so the result is precise.
Where do the map shapes come from?
The countries are simplified from Natural Earth's public-domain map data and the US states from US Census outlines, so Italy, Japan, Texas and the rest are the real shapes, islands included.
What are the faint lines after my cut?
They show where everyone else cut the same shape today. Played for fun, Five cuts gives everyone the same five shapes each day, so after each cut you see a fan of everyone's lines with yours in gold, how many people cut it and how many of them you beat. The lines are anonymous, and they never change your score.
Can I play Halfway on my phone?
Yes. It is made for touch: drag a line with your finger and lift to cut. It plays exactly the same with a mouse on a computer.
